The brand new series of Robot Wars debuted last night, with fans of the show responding positively. The first episode attracted 2 million viewers on BBC Two according to overnight figures.

Thats more than the series finale of the latest series of Top Gear, and roughly inline with expectations.

The number is also likely to rise once the final figures are in, and catchup and on-demand services like iPlayer are taken into account.

The first episode of Robot Wars has been steadily climbing up the iPlayer most-popular chart since airing yesterday evening, and at the time of writing currently holds the number two spot.

Reviews of the series have mostly been positive, with praise given to the improved and more powerful competitor robots, the impressive House Robots and the new arena.

Viewer's responses to the new presenting lineup of Dara O Briain and Angela Scanlon have also mostly been positive, although some have called for the reinstatement of long-time host Craig Charles.

Some concerns about the editing and camera angles used have been raised, particularly during the first two battles which featured four robots in the arena at the same time. Quick cuts and occasionally shaky camera work sometimes made the action difficult to follow.

On the whole however, after 12 years off air it does look like Robot Wars has pulled of a largely successful return to our screens, with millions of fans now eagerly awaiting episode two.

Robot Wars returns to BBC Two at 8pm on Sunday 31st July.
